The government and striking doctors should hold talks to solve genuine problems that led to the medics laying down their tools.Although the doctors are simply asking for their rights, they should also understand that the government has problems to contend with. Times like these require that we do not put at further risk the lives of patients.
Muhimbili National Hospital has been hit where it hurts most by the go-slow by doctors who are demanding better pay and improved working conditions, including adequate working tools, training and medical supplies—issues that are critical to the survival of patients.
With all due respect to the parties involved, this is no time for hard line positions. We urge the government to take steps to resolve the problem immediately. According to an interim committee formed by medical personnel and chaired by Dr Ulimboka Stephen, things have fallen apart to the extent that patients are advised to buy their own supplies in order to be diagnosed at hospitals such as Mwananyamala, Amana and Temeke.
The government admits that doctors’ claims are genuine but says it does not have the means to deal with them. Muhimbili National Hospital, for example, is reported to have received only Sh4 billion against budgetary needs of Sh19 billion in the current financial year. That is why we think dialogue between the doctors and the government is best for all parties concerned.
