GIVE PUPILS DECENT TOILETS  Send to a friend

A toilet – and, significantly, a clean one – is a symbol of civilisation, and  is what partly distinguishes  human beings from animals. That combination is woefully lacking  in  some residential  neighbourhoods, especially in urban centres and institutions, apparently because, being linked to human waste,  they are generally considered unworthy of big attention.

The lack of toilets altogether presents a bigger problem, as it  compels people to relieve themselves in bushes, thereby rendering them  circumstantially indistinguishable from animals. That is the plight that pupils at  Kashabo Primary School in Bukoba Municipality  are enduring, after its inauguration last year without the facilities.

The senior government official who inaugurated the school was probably not aware of the deficiency, or perhaps was, but feels, like some, that toilets  are not a priority issue but of secondary importance.

That wouldn’t be surprising, for, the education ministry endorses the establishment of all schools, to which, moreover, inspectors pay, or are supposed to pay regular visits. The situation must be rectified fast,  for  that situation exposes pupils to diseases,  de-motivates them, and   compromises their classroom competence.

Plus, it features them in a comic show of being taught the importance of  hygiene, while they are schooling in an
unhygienic  environment.Ideally, they should not only be beneficiaries of a sound hygienic environment, but advocates of high hygienic standards in the broader society.
