Hosting the IAAF World Athletics Championship in Africa is a thought that is often dismissed as far-fetched. For a continent whose people have to really struggle for bread and butter, allocating billion dollar budgets for a sporting event might be viewed as presumptuous.

Yet, this is what Tanzania might do in the next ten or so years. Early this week, the IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federation) vice chairman, Sebastian Coe, promised to campaign for Africa, Tanzania in particular, for it to host the global event.

Coe, who also chairs the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympics Games organising committee, was in the country for a London 2012 Games’ International Inspirational programme ahead of the Summer Olympics.

During his tour, the Englishman took a different approach to this seemingly Herculean task. He belongs to the school of thought that Africa has come of age.
The trouble is, his pledge comes at a time when the Tanzania athletics standard is fast diminishing. Coe was stunned at the potential talent in Tanzania when he visited Dar’s Kibasila Secondary School where he met students participating in a London 2012 Games global sports development programme.

We concur with Coe that the ambition of the world sports family should be to help deliver the IAAF championship to a continent that has contributed immensely to the event. Relevant authorities should take his pledge as a challenge and strive to turn around the country’s athletics fortunes.
