The eight MDGs that were assented to by 191 UN member states in 2000 commit world leaders to combating poverty, hunger, disease, illiteracy, environmental degradation, and discrimination against women. The deadline for their achievement is 2015. Fortunately, Tanzania has put in place poverty reduction strategies, such as Mkukuta, for the Mainland and Mkuza for the Isles, that run in tandem with the MDGs. According to the UNDP, the country is clearly headed towards the achievement of the goals related to primary education and gender equality. It has also fought a good war against malaria and HIV/Aids, but is lagging behind in other MDGs. Areas that need attention include reduction of child mortality and female to male ratio in tertiary education which favours the latter. It is also critical that we improve maternal health and environment protection. Tanzania therefore needs to fashion its policies towards investments that favour the poor. These should target the health, education and infrastructure development sectors which could play a pivotal role in job creation. Much as reduction of extreme poverty by 2015 seems to be, policies like Kilimo Kwanza, if well implemented, could help to reduce food poverty by that time, if there will be a consistent acceleration of agricultural production. |
