The proposal during a construction stakeholders’ seminar in Dar es Salaam that workplace health and safety issues be taught in schools to curb occupational accidents is commendable, though belated.

It was revealed during the seminar that about 2.2 million workers die, 270 million sustain non-fatal injuries, while another 160 million suffer short or long-term illnesses annually as a result of workplace accidents.

According to the Ardhi University vice-chancellor, Prof Idrissa Mshoro, many people work in dangerous surroundings that were not well known to them. Indeed, the prevention of occupational fatalities depends on the understanding that a worker’s safety is not only a responsibility of the worker, but also a primary responsibility of the employer.

Employees often receive basic safety training, but language barriers sometimes prevent them from fully understanding the safety procedures.

Equally to blame is the lack of transparency and accountability in the construction sector which has led to substandard work resulting from attempts to cut costs, thus putting workers’ lives at risk.

We strongly support the stakeholders’ proposal on the inclusion of health and safety issues in the education system because having employees and managers with the requisite competencies is the most effective way to ensure compliance of existing legal provisions on safety and health at workplaces.
