Scholars dealing with problem solving techniques believe – among other things – that there are at least four stages to reaching the correct solution.

Top on the list, of course, is getting to know and understand the problem.

That done, one must come up with a workable plan towards solving it.

Executing the plan is another crucial stage, which brings us to the fourth one, and perhaps the last one: that of reviewing what has been carried out and do necessary adjustments accordingly.

Being in the dark means one can be taken for a ride – for a very long time – without detecting that one is not getting value for one’s money.

Judging from what was revealed by Tanzania Consumer Advocacy Society that 90 per cent of Tanzanian consumers do not know their rights, it is clear that many of us are being short-changed without knowing. And even when we know, we hardly do anything about it since we aren’t aware it is our right to do so.

Hence, unscrupulous business people continue to sell shoddy goods and services – and getting away with it.

This is mainly due to what we may describe as a culture of complacency. One is sold a product that is not his money’s worth, yet he keeps quiet.

Many people cite bureaucracy to explain why they don’t pursue their violated customer rights.

We all know that one’s rights cannot be acquired on a silver platter, but all the same, it is important that government look into ways of cutting down on bureaucracy. This would make it easy for people to seek redress with minimum inconvenience.

However, at the end of the day, consumers must be ready to fight for their rights, if they are to get value for their money. And they can only do that fruitfully if they have proper understanding of their rights.
