The empowerment of women in politics and other sectors is an idea whose time has come. And the new Election Financing Act is a tool that should go a long way in ensuring that women compete with men for elective posts on a more equal footing, but only if the law is properly administered.

Traditional beliefs have contributed to marginalizing women in various spheres of life and it’s more so in areas where the rule of the game is making money and spending it.

Creating a level playing ground for all irrespective of their gender is a means to enhance democracy. No wonder, President Jakaya Kikwete is optimistic that the election law will help boost women’s chances of winning elective positions.

However, it won’t come that easily. This is why we urge the authorities, especially the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau, to endeavour to enforce the law to the letter.

But as we have argued time again, political parties have a role to play in democratisation. If they shun corruption and improve the chances of women competing favourably, our country will get better.

Enacting the law is just the first step. The rest is to ensure that it is strictly enforced and it’s up to all to play their role in making this a reality.
