Are drivers of govt vehicles above the law?  Send to a friend

I have been wondering why traffic police never stop vehicles bearing the ST and SU number plates to inspect them for roadworthiness and check whether their drivers have valid licences.

Are people driving vehicles belonging to the government or parastatals exempt from road safety regulations that the rest of us are supposed to follow to the letter?  Perhaps the traffic police commander, Mr Mohamed Mpinga, can provide an answer to this question, which has been bothering me for many years.

I suspect that many of the people we see behind the wheels of flashy government vehicles are not qualified drivers, but they know that no traffic police officer can dare to flag them down and demand to be shown their driving licences.

There is no way we can make our roads safer if the law is applied selectively.  I had expected things would change after Mr Mpinga took over from Mr James Kombe, but it seems that I am terribly mistaken.

M.S. Kilongola,
Mlandizi.
