Rickety breakdowns a hazard to other vehicles  Send to a friend

Dar es Salaam is teeming with rickety breakdowns that are used to tow vehicles from accident scenes. The breakdowns are also used to tow vehicles from places where they are wrongly or illegally parked.

I have established that most of these breakdowns have neither insurance cover nor road licences, and have been wondering what happens when a vehicle is damaged as it is towed by these vehicles which were supposed to have been consigned to the scrap heap a long time ago.

It pains me to see the crews of these breakdowns carelessly towing immaculate vehicles to holding yards in Dar es Salaam.  The cars are towed without the breakdown crews taking care not to damage the transmission, body, lights or paintwork.

I’m told that this is a lucrative business, and I’m inclined to believe that traffic police officers have a hand in it.

H.M. Hussein,
Dar es Salaam.
