Sabodo deserves praise for transparency  Send to a friend
Thursday, 15 July 2010 09:42

What businessman Mustafa Jaffer Sabodo has done deserves praise.
Mr Sabodo, a CCM cadre, has done the unthinkable by donating a hefty Sh100 million to Chadema, an opposition party, under the full glare of the local media.

This is the kind of transparency we desperately need in Tanzanian politics.

We all know that there are people of Mr Sabodo’s status who provide financial assistance to opposition parties, but who go to great lengths to keep their support under wraps for fear of a backlash from the system.

There are also people who pump colossal sums of money into CCM, but who do so secretly lest queries are raise on how they obtained the cash.

I was quiet impressed by Mr Sabodo’s pronouncement that he remained a CCM member, and that he was giving the donation with the sole aim of strengthening democracy.

Mr Sabodo has shown the way.  We should reach a point where people should openly and freely provide financial support to political parties.

Doing so clandestinely only raises suspicion as to the real intentions of the benefactors.
