The growth of any nation depends on effective utilisation of its human resources. The word human resource covers many other issues but its most significant tool is people.

The more the number of workers in the nation the more its human resource as well as productivity. The less the population the less the human resource and productivity. However, if people are not well managed and utilised in production they become a burden on the national economy!

Rome was not built in a day, the saying goes and this is evident with our country today. While some people are sceptical about the possibility of Tanzania standing for itself, the rest are very optimistic. The latter have initiated various projects so that they earn a living.

Everyone who lives in Dar es Salaam knows about ‘fruit dealers’ as they have ‘offices’ everywhere. They are often found under   trees, behind roads and at bus stations. However, their service is essential for everybody, including the one who works in the nice places!

In order for the nation to develop, it needs people who are ready to venture out for the betterment of majority. Many nations in Europe developed due to better human resource management.

We cannot waste time crying for big industries while small enterprises are not being facilitated. People who sell fruits under trees are committed to making the nation move forward. Why shouldn’t they be given training and good areas to operate from?

A cock was at first a chick! These people who sell fruits could grow into a big fruits industry if given financial support and training.

The street fruit vendors could become future investors. They are keen to shun the dependency syndrome and do something for themselves. But they are being let down by politicians, who prefer mere words and empty promises instead of genuine efforts to lift the people out of poverty.

Human resource is a major tool for poverty alleviation. Let us support these budding investors as a way to motivate and encourage them. The fruit vendors could do much better if the media treated them the way they handled major investors.

Selestine Leonard,
Dar es Salaam.
