Dar deserves lower ranking in graft list  Send to a friend

I read with great dismay the East African Bribery Index (EABI) 2010 Transparency International report which lists Tanzania as the second least corrupt country in the region.

It came as a shock to me that Uganda, which was ranked second behind Burundi in the list of shame, fared worse than Tanzania.

As far as I am concerned, corruption has permeated all sections of society in Tanzania, and claiming that the country is the second least corrupt in East Africa is nothing short of preposterous.

If Tanzania, where traffic police officers openly demand and receive bribes and patients routinely bribe healthcare workers to get treatment, is viewed as virtually corruption-free, then people in Burundi must be paying bribes for the air they breathe.

I have visited Rwanda on several occasions and agree with the findings that it is East Africa’s least corrupt country.  However, Tanzania should be nowhere near Rwanda in regional corruption rankings.

Corruption still stinks to high heaven in this country, and the Transparency International report should not give us a false sense of confidence.

A lot still needs to be done to rid Tanzania is corruption, which is now a way of life for many of the country’s citizens.

J.K. Kibona,
Dar es Salaam.
