Parade the leaders of the club and I will show you the shame of Africa. The history of the former Organisation of African Unity is a sad tale. When Ugandans were being oppressed and massacred by the brutal regime of Idi Amin, OAU refused to intervene, citing the clause of non-interference in the internal affairs of member states. Only the courageous Mwalimu Nyerere went against that “wisdom” asking: “If your neighbour continuously batters his wife, do you stop him or wait and attend the burial?” AU does sanctify that practice. Africa is home to election and economic saboteurs. A case in point is Zimbabwe where President Robert Mugabe stole an election in broad daylight. He did it so shamelessly that if AU were any serious body it could not allow him to get away with it. Today Mugabe is sitting pretty on the throne, a honourable member Of AU. Other countries with disputed polls where AU response was wanting are Burundi, Sudan, Uganda and Rwanda. Kenya is one of the countries that suffered under the watchful eye of the AU. Right from the days of Moi we had the worst human rights abuse and stolen elections but AU did nothing. What moral standing do they hold on the country? Even the last disputed presidential poll, the organisation’s response was lacklustre and belated. Where was AU when Kenya burned? Was it not the West that came to our rescue? AU only came on board to give the Kofi Annan team an African appeal but the whole idea was a product of the UN, driven by western nations. So no serious nation can benchmark itself using the AU. To have AU as a reference is to fail democratically and economically. It was better to simply shut up. More than three quarters of the members are former military juntas who seized power through the back door. The rest are pseudo democrats, having stolen elections or made a mockery of democracy by holding sham polls. We must find our peers elsewhere. The likes of Al-Bashir do not deserve to sit in a Kenyan democratic fete. Al-Bashir is accused of killing his own black people. Bernard Amera, Nairobi. |
