Ministry, BFT owe boxers an apology  Send to a friend

National team boxers had every right to go on strike during the East and Central African championships held recently in Dar es Salaam.

The boxers did not deserve the shabby treatment they received from the Sports ministry and the Boxing Federation of Tanzania.

It is preposterous for anybody to demand that the boxers apologise for what they did.  It is the ministry and BFT which should apologise profusely to the boxers who were to all intents and purposes abandoned during the championships.  If I were a member of the team, I would have walked out for good.

Tanzania hosted the championships, and yet members of its team were unashamedly told to buy their own meals and pay for their transport to and from the venue of the championships.  I am sure nothing like this has happened anywhere else in the world.

It seems someone somewhere was out to demoralise and frustrate our boxers, and they succeeded in a bid way.

Instead of the government rushing to accuse the boxers of shaming their country, it should conduct in-depth investigations with a view to establishing the facts behind the strike.  It is the ministry and BFT that have shamed Tanzania.  I know that President Jakaya Kikwete is a sports fan, and I hope he is aware of this outrage.

In the meantime, BFT should suspend Tanzania’s participation in regional and other international events because it is clear the highly disorganised federation is not up to the task.

BFT has failed big time, and it’s no wonder that Tanzania is now a pale shadow of the regional amateur boxing powerhouse that was a force to be reckoned with in the past.

BFT officials should do Tanzanians a big favour by stepping down and letting committed individuals run the sport.

Boxing Fan,
Arusha.
