Now that President Jakaya Kikwete has acknowledged that the newly constructed Kilwa Road in Dar es Salaam is substandard, I expect exemplary measures to be taken against those responsible for this scandal.

I am sure President Kikwete is aware that this road started crumbling even before its construction was complete.

We were told that the 12-kilometre dual carriageway stretch road would be built by a reputable Japanese contractor, but I can bet my last cent that the company that build this sham of a road has nothing to do with the contactor mentioned by the Infrastructure Development ministry when announcing the project.

I live at Mbagala Maji Matitu, and drive almost daily to and from the city centre where I work, and it pains me a lot to see the poor workmanship along the entire stretch of the newly constructed road.

One does not need to have a PhD in civil engineering to know that the road will not last ten years.

I fail to understand why renowned investigative newspapers such as The Citizen have not highlighted this anomaly.  Has the media been compromised to keep this mega-scandal under wraps?

S.J. Yohana,
Dar es Salaam.
