Spare us these junk text messages  Send to a friend

The Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) should do something about mobile phone subscribers being bombarded with unsolicited SMSs from network operators.

Mobile phone companies have found an inexpensive way of promoting their services and new products through broadcast text messaging, much to the annoyance of customers.

I, for one, have been receiving at least three such messages every day, including in the middle of the night.

It is very annoying when your phone beeps to alert you of an incoming SMS, only to discover that it is your network operator is promoting some service or advertising a promotion.

It is especially exasperating when you get these junk SMSs when expecting important messages.

Mobile phone companies initially attached advertisements to their free ‘please call me’ messages, but they have now gone a step further and are sending unsolicited SMSs to their customers.

TCRA should intervene as a matter of urgency and spare us this inconvenience.   These unsolicited SMSs are not any different from junk email.  The only difference is that operators of popular email services such as Microsoft, Yahoo and Google are doing all in their power to keep junk mail out of users’ inboxes.

Mobile phone companies should use the media to advertise their services, promotions and competitions instead of taking shortcuts that inconvenience their customers.

Morogoro.
