By Christine Chacha The beauty season has official kicked off, naturally it means we are getting ready to pick our representative to the Miss World pageant. Miss Tanzania has always been an event surrounded with a lot of mystique that gets people talking. Word has it that behind all the glamour, stardom and buzz of the event lies a deep dirty well kept secret. Naked photos, sexcapades and the likes are not lost among our own beauty queen. While scandal and controversy have shaken up beauty industry for years, most of it was kept behind the scenes. Favouritism, rule violations and other scandals were kept under the carpet, out of the media and never publicised. Controversy and scandal makes the industry a dramatic soap opera rather than a traditional beauty pageant. Maybe, the days of pageant queens waving and smiling have come and gone. Wema Sepetu opened our eyes to a world of wild beauty queens who are not ladies and neither did the reigning queen do anything to improve the situation. But even then how many of us stop to ask ourselves where this whole concept of miss came from? Some trace it back to the days of Biblical Esther who beat all the women of the land to win king Xerxes heart. Basically they are a creation of men to make selection of mate’s easier. What could be better for a man than to have a parade of beautiful women all on one stage for him to select from? This leaves men spoilt for choices as all they have to do is take a pick. It’s like a shopping charade. It is no wonder that word in the grapevine has it that the winning contestants are sponsored by the big fish in town. Apparently, the more cooperative you are the higher the chances of winning. In fact, someone assured me that the winners are always pre-selected long before the real day. It’s a chilling accusation and I hope it’s not true, because if it is, we may never win the miss world title. While I cannot ascertain whether it’s true or not but as they say every lie has a shroud of truth around it. The winner is chosen based mainly on physical beauty-something which is quite relative and other things like personality, talent, and answers to judges' questions. How do we end up with a scandalous beauty queen is still a mystery that we are yet to unravel. In other countries like Venezuela or the US beauty pageantry is serious business, they are ambassadors of their countries just have to be perfect. Over the years beauty queens have been stripped of their titles for behaviors that could taint the image of the country. Last year, Miss England Rachel Christie, was stripped of her title after getting into a nightclub fight with another contestant. Not such a ladylike behavior you would say, perhaps the most publicized beauty queen scandal ever. Vanessa William became the first black girl to win the Miss America, she, too, was stripped of the title after nude pictures of her surfaced. The moral of the story, though, is that beauty alone is not criteria to look out for this prized and much publicised title. This is the reason that these beauty queens cannot even influence or command respect in society. Over the years men have used their power and money to influence decision making all over we hope this is not one of those areas. But as I said, I heard it all from the grapevine.
