Why do we neglect our personal hygiene?  Send to a friend

By Christine Chacha

Earlier this week a friend sent me an email about a certain interesting discussion she had had with a couple of friends and its content stunned me.

“Did you know that most men do not wash their undies and women likewise do not wash their bras as often as they should?”  read part of the mail.

The responses she had were quite disturbing.
While this got me thinking, worse still, was the responses that the email had drawn. I have always assumed that personal hygiene is common sense if not an inherent thing that you automatically uphold until this shocking email got me thinking otherwise.

Clothes cover up a lot and so when you are told looks can be deceptive, do not doubt it for a second.
What lies beyond the suits, shirts and trousers would have you thinking twice about the woman or man besides you. Take this case as an example; a woman walks into a club looking clean and smart. Her crisp clean and well pressed skirt and blouse would have you thinking, she is worth the world .

Now imagine some tatty, grey and dirty straps peeking from the sides of her blouse, straps that are neither white nor cream. What would you think of her? Is a bath everyday, brushing the teeth twice a day all there is to hygiene if the garments that come closest to our body are not well taken care of?

Have you ever wondered why there is always a stench in the daladala that you can’t figure out the source?
There have been a series of researches done that will solve this mystery. These researches have actually confirmed that both women and men do not wash their undergarments  as often as they should.

While men are not renowned for their underwear fashion sense as women are with their lingerie’s, the research findings are most disturbing among them. Apparently, most men wear their brief three days in a row before it is considered dirty.

This is just gross, what is more interesting is the fact that there are women who wash their men’s inner clothes. I am told that in Uganda for some crazy reason washing your man’s goodies is thought to be romantic.
Don’t get me started on the women, they are not as clean either, as a new study shows that on average women only wash their bras six times a year.

SIX, I was actually appalled by the figure because it doesn’t mean that bras do not get dirty. With this mind I set out to find out the actual statistics on the ground and it’s sad to admit that it’s the truth may be even worse.
Most of the ladies admitted to washing their bra at most once a month! And others see no need of changing their bra.

Lets face it, you do not always wash your bra that often, for some reason most women don’t just see bra as something you have to wash as often as we wash our other clothes. They are in that respect a lot like a jean-the more you wash the more worn out they are likely to be.

Changing underwear is something we assume that everyone does, apparently, most don’t. I do not want to give hygiene classes but it’s disturbing to know that people such important details of our lives.
