Name: Mtakuja Primary School Established: 1975 Location: Vingunguti Mnyamani No. of Pupils: 3,650 ( 1,442 boys and 1,808 girls) School Motto: ‘Education is the key of life’ FROM THE TEACHERS Elizabeth Chiwambalo - Headmistress Our school belongs to the Ilala Municipality. It was established to ease the burden of hundreds of local pupils, who used to endure long distances to the nearest school. It was named Mtakuja due to the high numbers of street children who came to register. The school started with 31 pupils (14 boys, and girls 17). It had only three teachers then. But now the number of pupils has increased to 3,650. However, this increase poses a number of challenges. Firstly, we have a serious shortage of desks. We need at least 1,110 desks. Right now, we have only 355. Secondly, the school needs a durawall for security issues. The society that surrounds us is noisy, and we need the pupils to concentrate. Valeliana Malonga – Math and Science The school performance is not bad. We have extra lessons for Standard Seven pupils, who are soon sitting their national examinations. All teachers understand their duties and responsibilities, which makes work easier and more effective. In addition, we work as a team to ensure every pupil is given his or her right to better education. We also maintain discipline to ensure quality. We always advise parents to make regular follow-ups on their children’s performance since most of them live near by. FROM THE PUPILS Mustapha Shabani - Grade 7 Our school surroundings are very good. The teachers are doing a great job. They teach us to be confident. However, we need the government to help the school buy more desks and reading materials to make learning more comfortable for us. Christina Zabron – Grade 7 The school is good. We cooperate with our teachers because they have taught us to behave well, and to respect elders. But, I also ask the government to help us build a durawall because people from outside come to disturb. So, sometimes we find it hard to concentrate. FROM THE PARENTS Mussa Kassana The school must be commended for enrolling a significant number of children from the streets. We also commend the teachers for doing such a great job under the difficult conditions. And so, we ask the government and parents to cooperate with the school administration in buying more desks and study materials for the school. Compiled by Devotha John |
