Amosi Katoke is a pharmacist working with Nakiete Pharmacy at Mwange in Dar es Salaam. In this interview, he shares more about his career and what it means being a pharmacist: What does a pharmacist do? A pharmacist is a healthcare professional who helps people achieve the best results from their medications through distributing prescribed drugs to individuals. He or she also advises patients on the selection, dosages, interactions, and side effects of medication as well as ensuring that they are using their medications safely and effectively. How long have you been doing this? This is my third year now. What do you like about your job? The fact that I am doing something I’ve always wanted to do since I was young. I also like the fact that I am involved in the process of helping people suffering from various ailments. What challenges do you face? Most Tanzanians have a poor understanding of drugs – how to handle specific medications and so forth. For example, there is a tendency by patients to ask for certain prescriptive drugs when they do not have prescriptions. More so, many times we have to deal with some patients who bring sample drugs to the pharmacy instead of prescriptions given to them by doctors. Is it a highly paying job? Earnings are fairly high, though at times one might be required to work into the night, during weekends, and on public holidays. Email: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
