We all love looking good. So, we spend hours at shopping malls looking for trendy clothes that give us an elegant look. When we get one, all the credit goes to the shops and designers. However, there are unsung heroes behind the fashion craze. They are tailors. In this interview, we find out more from Salma Idrisa Matumla, a tailor based in Dar es Salaam:

What is your normal day like?
I arrive at work at 8 am. The first thing I do is to clean the place. After that, I take whatever is on the table for the day.

How long have you been a tailor?
About six years now.

What else do you do?
I also design, but with the help of my boss.

Where did you study?
Kiuma Technical College in Tunduru.

Who are your customers?
We make African outfits for women using African fabrics. Our scope of business is a bit wider. We receive orders from as far as Comoro, but we also make clothes for some ambassadors’ wives based in Dar es Salaam.

What are the challenges?
Rejection of clothes from customers. There are times you spend a lot of time designing and making an outfit only for the customer to return it to you because they are not satisfied, so you have to re-do them, this consumes a lot of time.

They say tailors are among the best liars. Is it true?
Not really. The thing is it is very difficult to reject a tender from a customer but the problem is that every customer needs her clothes at her own time without considering that there are other clients who came before him or her. Therefore, in trying to please them, you are forced to say yes to the deadline they give you even when you cannot meet it.

What have been your best moments in this career?
Working with different famous designers. This has given me an exposure and shaped me to be more creative in my work.

Does your family happy with what you do?
Absolutely.

I have noted a marked uptick in the sales of dashikis. Perhaps with the continued collapse of the US economy, there will be a collapse of borders along ethnic lines as well. www.dashikis.net
