Kibaki honours seven journos for good work
By Samwel Kumba,
Citizen correspondent Nairobi

Seven journalists were among the many Kenyans who were honored by President Kibaki for their outstanding service to the nation in their line of duty during the 45th Jamhuri Day celebrations.

The journalists were recognised for the long and exemplary service. The President led the celebrations at Nyayo National Stadium.

The journalists who were awarded include the Nation Media Group’s Wangethi Mwangi, Joseph Odindo and Bernard Nderitu as well as Tom Mshindi who is based in Uganda. The others are Jeff Koinange of K24, Rosemary Orlale and Mwende Mwinzi.

The awards come amidst tension between the media and the government over the just passed Kenya Communications (Amendment) Bill 2008, which is awaiting the President’s signature to become law. It is understood that the selection was made months ago.

During the celebrations that marked their honour, a number of journalists, human rights activists and wananchi were arrested for protesting at the Nyayo National Stadium.

Protests were also reported in other parts of the country. The protesters were angered by a decision by legislators not to pay taxes on their allowances, high food prices and Parliament’s move to gag the media and take away civil liberties.
