Lilongwe. Malawi President Bingu wa Mutharika likened Malawians to 'chickens' that make noise on simple issues like the twin problems of forex and fuel, which are “just small challenges”, saying Malawi is facing the numerous problems than those two.

Mr. Mutharika made the remark in Zomba, Malawians old capital city, when he launched a National Tree Planting season which comes during the rainy season. The President chided at Non Governmental organisations that fight for human right for failing to attend the National Tree Planting Season launch , saying; “they did not know that issues of climate change were also human right issues.”

“Malawians are like chickens, they cry over simple issues. Are you telling me that the only problems you can cry about are forex and fuel? We have challenges of climate change, but where are they, where are the ‘opposition’ NGOs?" Mutharika queried while mimicking chicken cry.

Mutharika said the opposition political parties and 'opposition' NGOs were only interested on issues that would endear themselves with the international community but that would not help Malawians.

"If you have ideas on how develop this country come to me.I call upon [Bakili]  Muluzi and John Tembo to come forward if they have constructive ideas on how to develop this country," he said.

Recently Muluzi had offered to help Mutharika to sort out the economic mess the country is going through while Tembo—the leader of opposition in parliament—said he would wait for official communication from government to take up the offer.Mutharika then admitted that Malawi is facing maize scarcity and that if the dry spell continues the scarcity will spread to many parts of the country.
