Bukoba. Tanzania has beefed up security along its border with Burundi following reports of internal fighting in the neighbouring country.

Measures taken by Tanzania include deployment of TPDF soldiers for intensified patrol along the common border. This was confirmed by Kagera Regional commissioner, Col (rtd) Fabian Massawe who refuted earlier reports that Burundi troops were engaging rebels within the Tanzania territory.

Col Massawe said rebels often were crossed the border to the Tanzania side in to reorganise themselves whenever they are overwhelmed by advancing government troops.

“It’s not true that the fighting was taking place within our land... the rebels had apparently taken temporary refuge after being overpowered by Burundian government forces,” Col Masawe told a press conference.
He said this was established during consultations between the officials from Cankuzo and Muyinga regions in Burundi with residents of Ngara Districts on the Tanzanian side.

He said following the fragile security atmosphere, Tanzania has strengthened security along the border that involves deployment of TPDF soldiers as well as members of the Police Force. He said a camp has been specifically established in Ngara District where the soldiers would be based.

There was increased safety concern among the people in the area following huge explosions.
However, he noted that the situation has not yet reached a stage requiring full intervention by the TPDF. He said the Police Force would be responsible to check on the movement of people along the border, while soldiers would be required to ensure the border was secure.

Col Massawe, who is also the chairperson of the Regional Peace and Security Committee, said since the operation started, the police have arrested several rebels who have been handed over to Burundi authorities after verifying their immigration status.
