The Citizen Correspondent Dar es Salaam. Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL) has started repairing its aircraft in the country in efforts to cut down the high cost of maintenance abroad. The new approach, which uses the expertise of local technicians, is expected to relieve the national carrier of the burden of having to part with high charges in foreign currency. The announcement was made yesterday in the city by the ATCL technical director, Mr John Ringo, when he briefed journalists on the progress of aircraft number DASH8-300 which was expected to take off by mid-March. “In South Africa, for example, a technician charges between $50 and $60 (about Sh80,000 and Sh96,000) per hour; the one we repaired there last year cost us $800,000 (about Sh1.28 billion). We now only buy spare parts and hence save a lot of money,” he said. Mr Ringo explained that the company’s hangar was well equipped and had the necessary manpower for maintenance of aircraft.However, it has no modern state-of-the-art equipment used in other countries.
