The Citizen Correspondent Masasi. Masasi District residents in Mtwara Region have asked the government to give more time to people to discuss the nature of the new Constitution they want. The residents warned against politicising the process, as this could deny it the legitimacy it needs to make it a powerful instrument of governance. Speaking during a symposium to educate the citizens on the new Constitution writing process, they noted that it was true that the country needed a new Constitution to reflect the current socio-economic development. The symposium was organised by a network of non governmental organisations in Masasi District under the sponsorship of the Foundation for Civil Society. It brought people from various social aspects. In his contribution, Mr Nghali Charles, noted that politicians should not be allowed to mess up with the process. Mr Charles, a student from Ndanda Secondary School, said there was a need to prepare grassroots rallies to educate the people on what they are supposed to do in the process of writing the new Constitution. “We want a Mother Law which would work for the people and not politicians. Politicians should not be allowed to dictate terms during the process,” he said. Another participant, Ms Agnes Dustan, a resident of Namajani Village, noted that the process should be open and the citizens made to feel free to express their views. Ms Dunstan insisted that the envisaged Constitution should be a tool to improve the lives of people, it is important that they are allowed to offer their views freely. She urged the use of various mediums such as mobile phones and news media to sensitise and educate people on what is expected of them. Mr Hosea Kione, urged the speeding of the process as delays would discourage people from airing their views on what should be in the new Mother Law. Ms Stela Kambanga warned that unnecessary interruptions of the process could cause chaos as people were keenly waiting to get the new Law. |
