By Daniel Mjema, Moshi The ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) in Moshi Rural is accusing the opposition Tanzania Labour Party (TLP) over what it described as “abusive and violent election campaigns” against its followers in Vunjo constituency. The accusations were levelled yesterday by CCM’s district secretary, Mr Allan Kingazi at a brief ceremony to accept chairman of Kariwa village Mr Proti Mauki who has decamped to CCM from the opposition Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (Chadema). Mr Mauki told the gathering that he has made up his mind to defect to CCM as he accused the party of propagating confusing policies and that CCM deserved re-election for the progress it brought about in the Moshi urban. Mr Kingazi claimed that since the campaigns kicked off nearly two weeks ago, TLP zealots supporting TLP’s Vunjo parliamentary seat aspirant Augustine Mrema have been violating election ethics that political parties have agreed and sworn to respect during campaigns. The secretary general cited two incidents in which he claimed TLP supporters attacked two CCM members, Evarist Lyimo and Ramadhan Mdoe whose cases have been reported to the police. On his part Mr Masenga said if the growing habit of TLP supporters to incite CCM supporter is left unchecked it could result into a break of peace in the area even before elections are held. Reached for comment, Mr Mrema partly admitted to the allegation, saying when such chaos happen it was always CCM who start provoking his supporters. “It’s CCM who provokes us. Why should we have to cause confrontation while I have already won the parliamentary seat for Vunjo? Mrema responded. He also alleged that a week ago a CCM follower approached him and threw him beer at his chest. The CCM seat for Vunjo is defended by a lawyer with the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), Mr Chrispin Meela. |
