By Bernard Lugongo The Tanzania Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Davis Mwamunyange has asked for close collaboration among African countries in taming increasing wave of piracy in the Indian Ocean. Gen Mwamunyange said the war on piracy in the region also required support of the African Union and other member countries. “For us, we are ready to combat the piracy, but it’s difficult to end the problem in the waters if we are left to work alone without cooperation from our neighbours, and the whole African Union,” said Gen Mwamunyange. Gen Mwamunyange also called on the public to inform the army whenever they suspect person involved in piracy as their contribution to fight the problem. “Some of the pirates are in public living among us... fighting this problem needs support and contribution from members of the society to notify the authorities whenever they suspect anyone,” he aid. He showed praises to the Government, saying it has done a lot in efforts to ensure that the army was operating in efficient manner. “The Government has made our army operate efficiently by providing it with the necessary facilities and other services,” he said in front of minister for Defence and National Service, Dr Hussein Mwinyi, who graced the celebrations. For his part, Dr Mwinyi promised government continued support to TPDF so as to make it ready able to respond in case of emergencies. |
