The candidate for Arusha Urban on a Tanzania Labour Party (TLP) ticket, Mr Macmilan Lyimo, has pledged to return all open spaces, including the Kilombero bus stand, to the local authorities if elected. Speaking to journalists at TLP offices in Arusha yesterday, Mr Lyimo outlined repossession of all the city’s open spaces, which were haphazardly sold, as his priority number one. “I will ensure Arusha City Council gets the status it deserves. Few people are currently using the council as their farm by harvesting whatever they want,” Mr Lyimo asserted. He said the previous Kilombero bus stand had been sold to a businessman, who had turned it into a business complex, while another area, which was planned for a city secondary school, had also been dubiously sold. “I plead voters to elect me... once elected, I will go through files of all the sold plots and open spaces and initiate the repossession plan as our civic leaders have been doing,” Mr Lyimo said. Mr Lyimo, whose slogan is National and Arusha Ahead of Parties’ Interests, said he would improve health facilities, infrastructure and education if he clinches the seat. “There is a lot to be done ahead because for years Arusha lacked leaders, who are committed enough to the development of the city,” he said. Refuting controversial reports surrounding his residency, Mr Lymo argued that he had all along been doing his businesses and community activities in the city. |
