Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (Tanesco) has launched a crackdown on illegal power connections. Tanesco Principal Engineer Benedict Bahati said the company had established that there were many pre-paid electricity (Luku) meters that were not in their database. “We became suspicious, and decided to launch an operation in Dar es Salaam, Kagera, Arusha, Coast and Tanga regions, before deciding whether to extend the campaign to other parts of the country,” he said. Mr Bahati added that the operation would be carried out through the collaboration of the company’s information technology and security departments. The operation was meant to identify people who were using illegally connected Luku meters and those forging pre-paid receipts. “As for the receipts, maybe it’s the vendors who are being dishonest, but we are trying to identify consumers who will lead us to the source of the problem,” Mr Bahati said. Tanesco communications manager Badra Masoud said about a quarter of the power generated by the company was being used by consumers who did not pay for it. “Some people are using stolen Luku meters while some are forging Luku receipts, which cannot be traced in our database,” she said. |
