The Citizen Reporter Dar es Salaam. Two members of Parliament who have been expelled by their parties yesterday turned up at the august House offices to participate in committee activities.Kigoma South MP David Kafulila who was expelled from the NCCR-Mageuzi in November arrived earlier at Parliament offices before joining his fellow legislators in deliberations related to the Parliamentary Committee for Local Authority Accounts. On the other hand, Wawi MP Hamad Rashid Mohammed (CUF) who was ousted from the Civic United Front (CUF) along with other House members attended the committee meetings as well. Mr Mohammed is a member of the Parliamentary Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs. The two MPs are fighting to maintain their status as lawmakers after they were expelled from their political parties recently. Late last year Mr Kafulila won a political reprieve after the High Court temporarily suspended the party’s decision to strip him of his membership. Lady Justice Alice Chingwile granted an application filed by Kafulila at the High Court in which he sought an order to suspend a move by NCCR National Executive Committee (NEC) to expel him from the party until a main case he filed at the same court to challenge the sacking is heard and determined. In the main case, the young politician asked the court to nullify NCCR-Mageuzi NEC’s decision, which basically led to his losing the parliamentary seat, which he said was unconstitutional. Mr Kafulila was expelled from the party on December 18, 2011 along with Mr Hashim Rungwe, the party's presidential candidate in 2010, for alleged misconduct and running an underground campaign to oust the party’s chairman, Mr James Mbatia. Moreover, Mr Mohammed and ten other members last week went to the High Court seeking an order to summon the opposition party trustee over contempt of court.Together with his colleagues, he wants the court to summon CUF National Council members, including the party’s secretary general, Mr Seif Shariff Hamad, to state why they should not be penalised for similar offences. Mr Mohammed and the team also want the court to nullify a decision reached on January 5, 2012 in Zanzibar by the CUF National Council to sack him and three other members.Through GF Law Chambers Advocates, he obtained a High Court order barring a CUF meeting from stripping him of his membership. |
