By Alex Bitekeye The Citizen Reporter Dar es Salaam. A total of 7,378 equal to 82.5 per cent of public leaders supposed to fill in and submit wealth declaration forms did so up to January 13 this year. The Public Leaders Ethics Secretariat announced yesterday that this is an increase of 22.5 per cent compared to last year, keeping in mind that the total number of leaders is 8,972.
Briefing reporters in Dar es Salaam yesterday, the secretariat’s secretary, Mr Tixon Nzunda, said the exercise ended on December 31 last year. “But we are still receiving the forms from those who have not complied with the exercise and we will look at their explanation on why they did not submit the forms before the deadline,” he clarified. He said the secretariat was still receiving forms because after the deadline they can still be received basing on reasons why the concerned official was late to submit them.
Concerning Members of Parliament, Mr Nzunda said a total of 315, equal to 90 per cent, have complied with the regulation.“We do not know why others have not submitted their forms, and we are waiting for their explanation.
Though we had achieved that much, legal action will be taken against all those who failed to submit their forms as they are going against the law,” said Mr Nzunda. He was flanked by the secretariat’s principal legal officer, Ms Getrude Cyriacus, and the director of administration and human resources management, Mr Abdulrahman Mdimu. Meanwhile, Mr Nzunda said a total of 41 public leaders were arraigned at the secretariat tribunal last year. Among them, 24 were held responsible for not filling wealth declaration forms. Six were given strong warnings while 18 got a warning.
