Dar es Salaam. The chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Security and Foreign Affairs, Mr Edward Lowassa, has asked the government to make sure that it releases all the money allocated to the Home Affairs ministry in this financial year.

Speaking to reporters yesterday at the Bunge offices in Dar es Salaam, Mr Lowassa (Monduli-CCM) said until now the ministry has received 53 per cent of the allocated budget. Mr Lowassa said his committee has been impressed by the performance of the Police Force in curbing robbery and reducing road accidents.

'This is impressive and the Force should be supported by the government by ensuring that it gets all the money allocated for its activities. The Police Force has managed to reduce robberies by 15 per cent and road accidents cases have also gone down... other departments should also think of becoming effective as the Police Force,'' Mr Lowassa said.

On issues of refugees, Mr Lowassa pleaded with the international community to accept an application by Tanzania to extend the deadline for refugees to return to their countries to December, this year. The foreigners were supposed to leave the country by the end of last year.

He maintained that it was important that the refugees return to their countries only if there was peace and stability.
Deputy minister for Home Affairs Khamis  Kagasheki said there are reasons that have forced the state to ask for the extension but said he could not make them public.
