By Habel Chidawali The Citizen Correspondent Dodoma. The government yesterday conceded that for a long time it has failed to allocate adequate development budgets to councils in the country due to financial constraints. This was revealed in Parliament yesterday by the minister in the Prime Minister’s Office in charge of Regional Administration and Local Government, Mr George Mkuchika, when responding to a question.
Mr Mkuchika conceded that the failure to allocate funds has affected the implementation of several development projects. He said because of that there were serious problems in almost all councils in the country due to lack of enough funds to finance a number of projects. He said several councils received only part of budget allocations during the last financial year.
Worse still, Mr Mkuchika told the House, it is not known when the financial situation would improve. “We have not sent money for long time… Even the Association of Local Authorities in Tanzania leaders have asked the government to review the situation which was getting worse,” he said. Mr Mkuchika was reacting to a supplementary question by Mohamed Misanga (Singida East - CCM) who wanted the government to explain why many development projects around the country had stalled.
Mr Misanga said everytime he asked about the situation, local authorities said the central government was yet to remit funds for the projects. In his basic question, the MP sought to know when the government would solve water blues currently facing residents of Mlandala Village in Singida Rural District.
