Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) supporters in Busanda constituency have been accused of torching a house belonging to an aspirant for a councillorship post on Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (Chadema) ticket in Geita District, Mwanza Region.

A civic leader, Mr Mabura Kachoji, named the aspirant for the Rwamgasa Ward councillorship as Mr Ntalima Massawe.

Geita district commissioner, Mr Philemon Shelutete, had thrice ordered the police in the district to arrest Mr Massawe allegedly for hindering development activities before the incident, according to Mr Kachoji.

“I do not believe there exists any person in this area, who is deliberately hindering development activities and yet people choose him to become their leader,” he said.

He cited another incident, which recently took place at Nyarugusu Ward in the constituency where unknown people attacked another aspirant for the councillorship post on Chadema ticket.

The assailants, according to Mr Kachoji, hit the aspirant several times on the head using an iron bar, leading to the seriously injured councillorship hopeful to withdraw from the race. Another Chadema member, however, is vying for the post in the ward.

The Geita district executive director, Mr Mpangalakela Katala, confirmed receipt of the complaints from Chadema and promised to work on them.

Mr Kachoji further explained that some village executive officers in the constituency closed down their offices whenever they saw an aspirant on Chadema ticket returning electoral forms.

Katoma ward executive officer, for example, closed down his office just after an aspirant on CCM ticket returned his forms on the last day for returning the documents as set by the National Electoral Commission.

The aspirant on Chademan ticket searched for the Veo and offered him a motorbike popularly known as ‘bodaboda’ for him to return to his office to receive the forms, but the officer refused on grounds that the vehicle flew a Chadema flag.
