Security organs should observe the country’s laws as it heads towards the General Election on October 31 this year.

Minister for Home Affairs Lawrence Masha issued this directive in Dar es Salaam yesterday when he opened the senior prisons officers annual general meeting.The three-day meeting will evaluate the prison department’s functions with the view to improving them.

Mr Masha said security organs should be impartial in political issues, especially during the election period so that the country avoids being involved in conflicts.

According to Mr Masha if defence and security organs will not prepare themselves well the country will be in trouble. He added that defence organs were important in making sure that the General Election is free and fair.

He called on those who will be given various responsibilities during the elections to perform them according to the law. They should follow procedures in making sure that the General Election is free and fair, he said.

Mr Masha directed that prison officers who will be reported with corruption scandal should be dismissed and taken to court so that the law may take its rightful course.
“I instruct defence organs not to be patient with them because such people destroy their name,” he said.
 
He continued to say that he would not like to hear such organs being blamed because of a few people who are not responsible.

The principal commissioner of Prisons, Mr Augustine Nanyaro, said they would use the meeting to discuss various issues in order to improve their work in the association.
More than 62 prison officers from all over the country are attending the meeting.
