Former form six student of Pugu Secondary School Paschal Kahangala,22, intents to unseat Home Affairs minister Laurence Masha from his Nyamagana constituency through a CCM ticket.

Similarly, a challenger of the minister for East African Cooperation, Dr Deodorus Kamala, has emerged.

Dr William Nyagwa of the Clinton Foundation announced in Morogoro to vie for the Misenyi constituency through CCM.

Mr Paschal, who completed school in February this year, said his decision to vie for the Nyamagana constituency was influenced by numerous problems in the constituency. He said the current administration has failed to solve them for many years.

Speaking to journalists in Mwanza, Mr Paschal said he was committed to his decision and went on:

“There is also a very poor representation of the youth in Parliament. I believe an increase of young people in parliament will help to hasten changes in the society while challenges faced by the youth can also be best represented in the legislative body.”

He claimed that the current MP had failed to fulfil his promises, including provision of free medical services to pregnant women and the elderly. He had also failed to create jobs for the youth as he promised, something that made most young people from the constituency resort to taking drugs, he said.

For his part, Dr Nyagwa, who is currently based in Ethiopia, said he has decided to vie for the Misenyi constituency because he is concerned by the long-term unresolved problems facing the people of that constituency.

“Despite the fact that Dr Kamala has led this constituency for a long time, it remains backward in development because of numerous problems,” he said.

He named them as poor infrastructure, particularly the road that connects the constituency with Mwanza city. He said this becomes impassable during rainy seasons, ending up disconnecting the town from the rest of the region.

Other concerns mentioned by Dr Nyagwa were conflicts between farmers and pastoralists. He said quite often the latter have been grazing their animals in farms causing unnecessary conflicts.

Yet, if there was a keen administration in the constituency this could have been a thing of the past, he said.
