The Southern diocese of the Lutheran church in Tanzania has announced that Njombe University will commence its academic programmes in 2011, noting that the institution offers students from all over Tanzania a complete university curriculum.

A press release issued in Dar es Salaam said that after completion of construction, the university will consist of five campuses, adding that the main campus, with the Faculty of Social Work, will be located in Njombe town.

The statement explained further that secondary education and religious leadership units will be located in Kidugala village, the engineering and vocational school will be based in Mafinga, an agricultural school will be located in Lupembe village and a health science and human habitat school will have its base in Ilembula village.
The statement said the university’s first students will be enrolled at Kidugala campus early next year.

“At Kidagula, the university will train social workers, religious leaders as well as Mathematics and Science teachers for secondary schools. What is different about the training of religious leaders from this university is that the students will not be ordained after graduation,” said the statement.

The goal of the programme has been cited as training religious leaders as social workers to assist their villages, said the statement.

“Using faith or theology and the ethical point of view, these future religious leaders will stress to their villages the merits of environmental stewardship and entrepreneurship through organic farming and resource conservation,” the statement added.

The programme’s goal was to improve the teaching of mathematics and science subjects at secondary schools throughout Tanzania, the statement added.

It added that the initial fundraising events for the construction of the university were concentrated in Southern Tanzania because it is the population from the region that will benefit most from Njombe University.

To date, said the statement, Sh200 million has been raised and another Sh800 million is still needed to complete construction and launch operations.
