Make our roads safe again

What you need to know:

A recent incident at Kitembo in Kibiti, Coast Region, whereby suspected bandits car jacked five vehicles and robbed drivers and passengers of their valuables is another testimony that some members of our security organs are sleeping on the job.

Security of people and their property is one of the foremost responsibilities of the State. It is for this reason that State organs move fast whenever there is intelligence information on something that may threaten people’s security.

Incidents whereby bandits waylay travellers are not uncommon in our country. It is unfortunate that most of them go unreported in the media. People are robbed of property worth millions every year. Some are hurt, and in rare extremes women get raped.

It is high time this sort of insecurity is dealt with permanently. We believe that the government has powers to end this type of crime. It also has the means and intention to do so. We call upon Home Affairs minister Mwigulu Nchemba to come up with strategies that will see the security situation in the country improving.

It is also high time security in Coast Region was improved further. Recently, there have been reports of killings of village leaders in Rufiji and nearby townships, but nothing seems to be done about it. The government must come open and allay people’s fears over recurrence of the incidents.
