Kampala. Uganda Cranes coach Bobby Williamson is optimistic his tracking of European-based footballers of Ugandan descent will yield some tangible results. The Scot had travelled to the United Kingdom to look at some of the known players with Ugandan roots.

Well, Bobby managed to speak with 16-year-old centre-half Bevis Mugabe from Southampton Academy during his sojourn.“I spoke with the boy and he is excited about the prospect of playing for Uganda,” Bobby told The Citizen in an interview yesterday. “He is young but his first target is to break into the Southampton senior team.

“Mugabe and Ibra Sekajja (19-year-old from Crystal Palace), are young and for me, together with other young players coming through locally, the future for Ugandan football is bright.”“I didn’t talk to Sekajja but I want to talk to his manager first.

They may not play for the senior team yet but they can be important in youth tournaments.”
Interestingly, one player Bobby expected to may be bump into in Europe, one real prospect for the Cranes, 26-year-old AIK’s Martin Kayongo Mutumba from Sweden, surprisingly met with Bobby early this year in Kampala.

“I met Mutumba here,” said Bobby, before we asked for emphasis’ sake what he meant by “here.”
“I met him here in Kampala in January, actually about three weeks ago. We exchanged mobile numbers and had some talk. (The Citizen Correspondent)
