By Majuto OmaryTaifa Stars head coach Jan Poulsen said yesterday he would change his playing formation against Algeria in their Friday’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Algiers. The Danish coach said he will switch from his preferred 4-3-3 system 4-2-3-1, which he believes would help put the hosts under pressure.“There might be changes in the midfield. I want to play two holding midfielders and three attacking ones. “We have practiced the new formation for sometime now and my players seem comfortable,” the Dane said before flying to Algiers. The 4-2-3-1 formation, which is both defensive and offensive, is mainly preferred by the Real Madrid manager, Jose Mourinho. This formation is effective for a team that adopts a balance defensive-possessive-offensive football philosophy. The style provides large wing spaces for teams to utilise and the distance could be drawn between the central attacking midfielder and the striker. It bears fruit when the hitman is speedy. Topflight teams that prefer this pattern include France, Netherlands and Russia. Others are Manchester United, Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen.Poulsen said they had an uphill task to defeat the Algerians, but reiterated Barack Obama’s “Yes We Can” slogan to inspire his players. “Algeria have high profile players, they gained a massive experience in the World Cup, so it’s a big match for us, but we’re ready for the battle. “The players are much disciplined and I feel we are strong enough to get results,” Poulsen said. |
