The national women soccer team, Twiga Stars, kicked off training at Karume Stadium on Tuesday with 19 players only showing up. The team that comprises 30 players is gearing up for the Africa Cup of Nations finals planned for South Africa next month. Twiga Stars head coach Charles Mkwasa said most of the players who reported for training were those who toured the US. The national team toured the US last month as part of their preparations for the forthcoming finals. “The training has resumed though on a low tempo, but we hope other players will report by next week,” he said. However, the outspoken coach disclosed that the official camp would begin on September 6, stressing that all players must report for intensive drills. He said: “The US tour helped my players gain a lot of exposure and confidence. “We played against experienced sides and they really showcased some sublime soccer…I believe they will leave their mark in Johannesburg. ” This will be the first time ever for the national team to take part in the finals of the prestigious African event. Tanzania made it to the coveted finals after booting out Eritrea on 14-4 goal aggregate. Being among the top African sides in the finals, Twiga Stars face a daunting task to outdo the likes of Cameroon, Algeria and host South Africa. Other countries lining up their troops for the tournament are; Algeria, Equatorial Guinea, Ghana and Mali. |
