The 10,000 and 5,000 metre race heroine, Restituta Joseph, has switched to full marathon ahead of the Commonwealth Games that get underway on October 3 in India. Restituta, who represented the country in the 1996 Olympic Games, has been competing in the 10,000 and 5,000 metre races for the past two decades. The Athletics Tanzania secretary general, Suleiman Nyambui, said they advised her change to marathon after considering many technical aspects. The legendary runner said among the aspects considered were pace and stamina. “She is still a very good runner despite her age, but we discussed and advised her to try the full marathon (42 kilometres). “The full marathon requires endurance and she has that ability…we’re delighted that she accepted our advice,” said Nyambui. He said Restituta had already secured qualifying marks in both 5000m and 10,000m races. According to the AT official, Zakia Mrisho would compete in the 3,000m or 5,000m races. He said most of the runners in the camp were in top shape and raring to go. The team would leave for New Delhi on September 26. “They are doing very well in training though some have to work really hard to be competitive,” he said. Other runners who will represent the country are; Samson Ramadhani, Patrick Nyangero, Shamba Gitin, Barae Hhera, Marco Joseph, Damian Chopa, Dickson Marwa and Frank Martin. |
