A last-gasp volley from Kenneth Asamoah gave Young Africans a 1-0 victory over AFC Leopards of Kenya in a friendly held at Sheikh Amri Abeid Stadium yesterday. The Ghanaian, who joined Young Africans this season, has so far bagged four goals for his side. Fielding the second string squad, Young Africans kicked off the match energetically, but 10 minutes later, the Kenyans were at the top of their game and pressed the hosts for an opener. AFC Leopards Daniel Onyango interchanged short passes with Edwin Misikho to unlock Young Africans defence, but the former fired wide. The visitors continued to create a number of scoring chances, but their attempts were to no avail. Young Africans came into the game midway through the first half, but their inexperienced strikers could not utilise the chances. The teams went to the dressing rooms deadlocked with the Kenyans enjoying a lion’s share of first-half ball possession. After the recess, Young Africans coach introduced the likes of Nurdin Bakari and Asamoah to bolster his youthful squad. The changes did not pay off immediately as AFC Leopards continued to launch a series of dangerous attacks. As the game wore on, Young Africans changed their games plan, pouring forward regularly, but they had to wait until the last minute to edge the Kenyans. Bakari, who once played for Simba SC, made a dazzling run from the centre of the pitch before feeding the Ghanaian who wasted no time to score with a long-range volley. Young Africans head coach Kostadin Papic said the match was good and it served his purpose of testing the second-string players. The Jangwani Street boys will play their second round Premier League match against AFC of Arusha on Saturday. AFC Leopards head coach Matano Robert conceded the defeat, but praised his players for their determination. Simba played another topflight Kenyan team, Gor Mahia, last week and the latter won 3-1. Meanwhile, Young Africans have once again requested the ministry of Information, Sports and Culture to grant them permission to use the National Stadium. Club’s information officer Louis Sendeu said they were expecting a positive response from government. Their earlier request was turned down. |
