Twigas to face Kenya in rugby  Send to a friend

Tanzania’s national rugby team, dubbed “Twigas” will face off Kenya’s Sharks in one of the opening matches of the Super Series (RSS) on April 24.
The fixture shows that Twiga will take on Kenya’s Sharks in Arusha  at the Friedkin Recreational Centre.
Sharks’ compatriots,  Cheetah and Lions, both of Kenya will clash in Nairobi  on the same date.
Victoria and Rwenzori will meet in Kampala while Rhinos and Buffaloes will clash in Nairobi.
The event ran for five weekends at various venues in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

The preliminary rounds will be played on the weekends of 24 April, 1 May and 8 May; semi-finals and finals will take place on 15 and 22 May respectively.
According to the Tanzania Rugby Union (TRU) secretary, Christopher Hatty, matches will be played in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, ensuring broad pan-East African coverage to sponsors.

The tournament’s eight franchises will comprise five from Kenya, two from Uganda, and one from Tanzania.
Kenya will be represented by Rhinos, Lions, Cheetahs, Buffaloes and Sharks. Uganda will be represented by Ruwenzori and Victoria. Tanzania will be represented by the Twigas.

Hatty said that Mini-Rugby, schools rugby and women’s rugby tournaments will run parallel to the main tournament.
Rugby in East Africa has grown from strength to strength with national teams moving up significantly in international rankings.
Tournament organisers once again look to partners who share the passion and drive for the continued success of East African rugby.
The event attracts between 3,000 and 5,000 people per day of the tournament in Nairobi.
Similar crowds are expected in Kampala and Dar es Salaam. The spectators will be ABC1 men and women while age-group demographics
The inaugural Rugby Super Series (RSS) was held seven years ago in Kenya with Unga Group as the title sponsor, and was dubbed the Jogoo Rugby Super Series. The tournament’s objective was to improve players’ pathway for breaking onto national teams.
Twigas have been participating in various international events including Africa’s premier event, Safari Sevens and CAR Super 16.
The CAR Super 16 saw Tanzania emerging winners in 2006 after defeating Niger in Arusha.
