By Doris Maliyaga Former Boxing Federation of Tanzania (BFT) vice president Chris Mutta has resurfaced and defended the national team boxers for “boycotting” the recently ended East and Central Africa Boxing Championship. Speaking with The Citizen yesterday, Mutta levelled criticism on the federation and the government for negligence. “I don’t see why the boxers are referred to as unpatriotic, they don’t deserve it and what they did was just right. “The BFT leaders are to blame for not facilitating the boxers whom they planned to drill. It’s high time they resigned,” he said. Mutta was one of the officials who were forced to resign following a drug trafficking scandal that rocked the country. The former TBF chief blamed the ministry of Information, Culture and Sports for being too soccer-centric. “They have been paying more attention to soccer, which too bad for other sports, if this trend doesn’t change, boxing will soon lose its status. “The ministry was aware of BFT financial situation, but they ignored the prospects of our boxers failing to show up in the event,” he said. He said the shameful incident would serve as a lesson for both the government and National Sports Council (NSC). |
