Brown Msyani The Citizen Correspondent Dar es Salaam. The Champions of the Champions Golf tourney unwraps today with 10 leading golfers setting sights on the top prize at the Arusha Gymkhana Club courses. The tournament was to take off early last month, but it was rescheduled due to financial constraints.
However, after successfully wooing sponsors, all the roads are expected to lead to the gymkhana club as the eagerly awaited event tees off.Tanzania Golf Union (TGU) official Sophie Nyanjera disclosed that the golfers who will compete in the 36-hole event were those who won the first and second positions in the TGU organised tournaments last year.
This strong field includes John Leonce (Arusha), Jimmy Mollel (Arusha), John Said (Arusha) Abbas Adamu (Moshi) and Elisante Lembrice (Arusha). Others are Isaac Anania (TPC), Frank Roman (Moshi), Nuru Mollel (Arusha), Pembe Kondo (Dar), Godfrey Leverian (Morogoro), Athumani Chiundu (Dar) and Aidani Nziku (Dar). Aidani Nziku, a household name in golf, was wary of the competitiveness of the competition.
“I know the tournament will be difficult, for I know the quality of my opponents, but I'm looking at the pleasure of the day and moment.” Nziku said he was geared up for the Champions of the Champions event.
“My opponents pose a great threat to my ambitious bid to win this tournament because of their international experience. “But after all this preparation, I am ready to win something from this tournament because for me confidence comes in how well I have trained.
“By the start of the first day of the tournament, I have a solid game plan and back up plans. I always try and put myself in a position to win the tournament. “I put all of my faith in God and all of my confidence in my ability,” he said. The golfer was busy honing his skills at Misenyi courses in Bukoba. Nuru Mollel, who had a dream season, also hoped to replicate his last year’s form.
