The Citizen Correspondent Dar es Salaam. Over 80 golfers are expected to battle it out in the Arusha Open planned to tee off on March 3 at Arusha Gymkhana Club courses. Tanzania Golf Union (TGU) administrator Sophie Nyanjera told The Citizen yesterday that the two-day tournament would help them pick national team players. Nyanjera said the 15-member national team squad will go to camp soon after the Arusha tournament for more training ahead of the Zone V Championship scheduled for April in Malawi.“The response from the golfers has been overwhelming and a lot of players from various clubs have shown interest to compete in the Arusha Open,” she said. According to her, the golfers will come from Arusha Gymkhana Club, Moshi Gymkhana Club, TPC Club, Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club, Lugalo, Kilombero and Mufindi. Sophie named some of the top golfers expected to jostle for top prizes as; Aidan Nziku, Iddi Mzaki, Athumani Chiundu, Michael Makala and Pembe Kondo. Other household names include; Hamisi Ally, Chiku Elias and Isaac Anania, Joseph Tango, Dionis Malinzi and Nuru Mollel.The list also includes Jimmy Mollel, John Saidi, John Leonce, Elisante Lembrice, Frank Roman and Mohamed Diwani. Nuru, the Morogoro Open champion, harboured hopes of replicating his form to win a second straight trophy. “The Arusha event will not be easy at all for there are a lot of brilliant golfers setting sights on the trophy, but I am well prepared for the challenge and hopefully I will add another silverware come next week,” he said. Meanwhile, Nyanjera disclosed that the TGU’s general election would be held on March 24 at TPC Club in Moshi. She called on all aspirants for the TGU posts to submit their application forms next Thursday at Lugalo offices. |
