The First Division Netball League enters into the quarterfinal stage today with four giant teams tipped to win the title. Holders JKT Mbweni, Police Mwanza and Immigration cruised to the quarterfinals from Group A while Jeshi Stars, Tanzania Prisons, Morogoro Prisons and Police Dar romped into the stage from Group B. The qualification of the six teams promises an enthralling quarterfinal stage as all are strong enough to clinch this season’s title. One of the tournament’s coordinators, Rose Mkisi, said yesterday defending champions JKT Mbwenu and Jeshi Stars stood a better chance to claim the title following their unbeaten record. “They have been outstanding, winning four out of matches shows how strong and committed they are... they have a big chance of lifting the trophy,” she said. Jeshi Stars head coach Mbuke Tubanga bragged that nothing would stop them from claiming the title given their striking form. “We have a winning squad comprising athletic players unlike our rivals, thus we are confident to win it,” Tubanga said. Veteran Bhoke Matambalya echoed Tubanga’s words adding that there was no strong opponent to match the new look Jeshi Stars. In yesterday’s matches, Jeshi Stars defeated Filbert Bayi 26-18 in a closely contested encounter while JKT Mbweni recorded a 24-15 victory over Immigration. Tumbaku of Morogoro fought relentlessly to post a 29-18 victory over Mapinduzi Dodoma at TTC Chang’ombe courts. The teams tied 10-10 at the halftime break, but Tumbaku stepped up their gear after the resumption and had the last laughter. The tournament is planned to climax on Sunday at the same venue. |
