A prominent Tanzanian athlete, Zakia Mrisho, put in a fabulous performance in France’s Lille Grand Prix to grab a gold medal. Mrisho, who was competing in the 3,000-metre race, clocked 8:45:36 minutes to beat 11 other competitors.

Besides winning the gold, Mrisho also won selection to the African team that will feature in the World Continental Cup planned for Croatia on September 5.

Esther Chemtai of Kenya, who was primed to win the race, crossed the finish line second, clocking 8:46:46. She won a silver medal.

The third place went to another Kenyan, Iness Chepkesis Chenonge, who clocked 8:46:46.

Mrisho started the race on a low tempo leaving the Kenyans dominate the early proceedings before coming to life in the final lap and finish in style.

Speaking with The Citizen yesterday, Athletics Tanzania (AT) president Francis John sang praise of Mrisho for winning the gold medal.

“She didn’t perform better in her recent events, but we are very proud that she has rediscovered her form.

“Beating the Kenyans is always not easy, but she did, we congratulate her for the victory.

“This is a clear indication that Tanzania will haul many medals in the forthcoming Commonwealth Games,” said John.

The AT president said the race was tough due to the fact that the winner beat her closest challenger by 10 seconds only.

Mrisho’s selection in the African team would be the second for a Tanzanian to compete in the continental event.Legendary Filbert Bayi was the first Tanzanian to take part in the championship back in 1974.

“Almost four decades have elapsed we last had a representative in such tournaments, so for Mrisho, this is a huge achievement, we wish her all the best,” he said.

The continental championship will involve teams from America, Asia/Pacific and Europe.

The event will host 51 Olympic winners and 136 winners of the World Championship.
